Eagle Scout Candidate to Build Prayer Garden for FPC

Eagle Scout candidate Brian Wisner has been working for six years to achieve the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America of Eagle Scout.  One of the requirements is to complete a service project.  Brian has selected to build a prayer garden here at our church for his service project; this is in recognition of our support of our local scouting program.  The garden will have a pathway leading to plants, benches, and a pondless waterfall and will offer a beautiful place to reflect and pray.  Brian must raise all of the money for this project, and we can support him with donations of money or supplies.  Donations over $50.00 will be recognized on a plaque.  If you would like more information, you may contact Brian by email at titobrianwisner@aol.com or contact Denise Lay.

General Assembly

Pastor Davies recently attended the 219th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  The Assembly made a number of important decisions that will impact the denomination for some time to come.  Pastor Davies will present and discuss actions at this year’s assembly on Sunday, August 1st, at 12:15 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.  All are welcome!

Stewardship Message

Tithing

A Definition:  The tithe serves as an external, material testimony of God’s ownership of the material and spiritual things of our lives.  The first place God’s Word mentions the tithe is Genesis 14.  On his return from the daring rescue of Lot from four enemy kings, Abraham encountered the priest Melchizedek and voluntarily surrendered to him a tithe (one-tenth) of everything he had.

The word tithe in Hebrew is maaser and in Greek dekate.  It literally means “tenth”.  After the word appears in Genesis it occurs twenty-eight times in the Old Testament.

Is Tithing Legalism?  Although the tithe is mentioned in the law, no punishment was indicated for not tithing.  There is a consequence (the loss of blessings), but there is no punishment from God for not tithing.  The rewards are described in Malachi 3:10-11, where God promises to pour out a blessing and keep the devourer away.  Tithing should always be a voluntary act on the part of God’s people.

Purpose of the Tithe:  Was the tithe intended to help establish the physical church and pay the wages of “full-time” ministers?  No, the tithe was established as a physical, earthly demonstration of man’s commitment to God.  God understood our greedy, selfish nature and provided an identifiable sign of our sincerity.  By surrendering some of our physical resources, we testify to our origin, just as a farmer does when he surrenders some of his crop back to the earth from which it comes.

Trip to the Holy Land

A journey to the Holy Land is a spiritual pilgrimage that every Christian should make at least once in a lifetime.  Now is the time to make this “trip of a lifetime” a reality for you.  Pastor Davies is planning a 10 day trip to the Holy Land February 8-17, 2011.

You are cordially invited to join him on this inspiring adventure.  The tour will include, but not be limited to, visits to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee, Masada and the Dead Sea, and Nazareth.  Trip brochures may be found at the Ask Me Information Desk.  Please note that the registration deadline is October 1st.

Church Golf Scramble

Our next fun and fellowship day, with a little golf included, will be at the Point O’ Woods Golf and Country Club on Saturday, August 14th, at 3:30 p.m. This time it will be a little different in that you can only have 3 clubs in your bag, and you can’t borrow clubs from your team mates, so pick out your favorite clubs! It will cost you $14.00 if you walk and $18.00 if you rent a cart. This includes a barbecue dinner afterwards. If you’d like to invite your spouse to dinner only, it will cost you $6.00 more. You may select your own team or just call and be placed on a team, and it is open to anyone. For more information, please call Greg Andreichuk, 860-0426, or Frank Mattox, 341-2484.

Christmas Wrapping Paper

Christmas wrapping paper is needed by Heidi Sturtevant.  She wants to get a jump start on her shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.  If you have Christmas wrapping paper that you would like to donate, please leave it for Heidi at the church office.  As always, thank you for helping Heidi’s shoebox ministry!

Crusade for Kids School Supply Drive Begins!

It’s the time of year when thoughts begin to turn toward “back to school.”  As a part of our community outreach program “Crusade for Kids,” we have partnered with Inverness Primary School (IPS) to identify needy students.  For many students, the burden of purchasing school supplies can be overwhelming.  You can help by donating school supplies that will be used to assist students who may be unable to purchase school supplies of their own.  Copies of the suggested school supply list may be found at the Ask Me Information Desk.  Look for the collection boxes in the Narthex and office reception area.  Thank you for your support of this very worthwhile program!

Capital Campaign Fund Statements

Statements showing the status of your Capital Campaign Fund pledge are available at the “Ask Me Information” Desk in the Narthex.  If your pledge has been fulfilled, there is no statement for you.  These statements reflect contributions through June, 2010.

Centennial Cookbook

Sharing recipes is a wonderful tradition, and we need yours for a centennial cookbook that will be published and available for purchase as part of our Centennial Celebration next year.  You may submit as many recipes as you like.  This collection of recipes will be a way to preserve past and future favorites.  Please pick up a recipe form from the Ask Me Information Desk or church office.  Recipes need to be turned in to the church office by September 30th.  If you have any questions, please see Carolyn Smith or Nancy Pekins.

Scripture Searchers

The Scripture Searchers class is studying “Jesus in the Gospels.”  Scripture Searchers is led by Jeanie Roberts and meets at 9:30 a.m. Sunday mornings in the church Library.  You may also contact Denise Lay for further information.
