Facts, History and the Rose WindowA BRIEF HISTORY
FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
The First Presbyterian Church of Inverness was organized on October 11, 1911, by Rev Roseborough, an evangelist of the church. The original congregation consisted of 25 members. Citrus County was a mere 24 years old, having been founded in 1887. In fact, the name Inverness was only 14 years old, the community having been named Tompkinsville prior to that time. The congregation first worshiped in the First Baptist; however, exactly one year from the time it was organized, October 12, 1912, a new church was built on Main Street at a cost of $2937.05. Of course, this did not include the cost of hymn books, a pulpit Bible, The congregation grew slowly over the years, a religious census taken in 1951 shows that the First Presbyterian Church of Inverness had 94 members in its congregation. The congregation continued to worship at the Main Street church until 1963. In that year, a new church was built on Grace Street. Most notable in the new building was a rose window given by The Trinity United Presbyterian Church of Uniontown, Pa. The congregation continued to grow and in 1969 ground was broken for an addition a Fellowship Hall and Sunday School class rooms. In 1986 further expansion would take place as the Methodist Church at the corner of Osceola and Main Streets was acquired and incorporated into the Grace Street church. In 1989, yet a new home was sought as the Citrus Memorial Hospital was expanding and offered to purchase the Grace Street church. In 1992, land was purchased at the intersection of Highway 44 and Washington Street for the construction of a new church, which was completed in 1994. That church is currently home to approximately 650 members of the congregation. The Reverend Craig Davies was called and installed at the church upon its dedication and he serves as its Pastor today. Today, members, visitors and friends in the community worship at one of three services each Sunday, two Traditional services and one Contemporary. The church will celebrate its Centennial in 2011 and invites the all members from surrounding communities to join in the celebration. Window History This beautiful and meaningful work of art was given to the First Presbyterian Church of Inverness by Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Uniontown Penn, with the Rev. James C. Clark as psator. It was first installed in the Grace Street Church 1962. At that time Rev. James Calloway, DD was the pastor. When the property on Grace street was sold to make room for the expansion of Citrus Memorial Hosptial, building plans began for our new church and it was decided during the planning that the window would be a great addition to the new sanctury.
